Steel Strongback

by Elsa L.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The client needed to create a large opening in the wall of a historic building in the City of Downey, which would require a Strongback before demolition. Damon Inc General Construction hired us to create design & fabrications, then we worked together for the installation.

Project Details:

  • Historic building w/ 18” thick brick wall
  • Opening of 40’W x 15’H
  • 2-Week timeframe for fabrication & installation

DESIGN & PLANNING

Our sister company GMEP Engineers provided the design for strongback & optional column support. Each C channel has 9/16” holes at 24” OC. To ensure the structural integrity of the wall, we created custom metal brackets for the superior and ground connections.

Metal Material List:

  • Steel C Channel (C10X30; Exterior-182” &18’&6.5’ one each; Interior-11.5’&12.5’&12’ one each)
  • Steel Column (HSS 6X6X1/4; for optional use per request)
  • Steel Plate (5/8”)
  • Bolts, Nuts & Washers

FABRICATION

Using our state-of-the-art welders and laser cutting machine, IBEC's well-trained fabrication team closely measured and programmed the cutting paths, double-checked design specifications, and finally set up the metalwork machinery to create each customized piece.

INSTALLATION

Supported by Damon Inc, we completed the installation of our products. The most challenging work was to align the 23+ holes with the strongback on the brick wall. We successfully achieved this goal and the demolition began.

DEMOLITION

With all metal components installed and the preparation work done appropriately, the other construction team proceeded with the demolition. We reviewed every single detail when the fieldwork was finished and continued to check in with the client in the following days.
